Great Blue Heron is proud to build on this legacy of (primarily) big band arrangements and beautiful vocal performances with a sparse yet full piano, bass and drum rhythm section, and adding complementary vocal harmonies and horn lines to create an innovative, full sound. The songs in this collection were originally recorded in the 20’s through 60s by Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughn, Dinah Washington, Nina Simone, Frank Sinatra, Bing Crosby, Louis Armstrong, Joe Henderson, Benny Goodman and Tony Bennett, among others. Harry Connick Jr., Michael Buble’, Diana Krall, Crystal Gayle, Natalie Cole, Joe Cocker, Willie Nelson and others have released more recent versions. Great composers behind the music included Irving Berlin, Harold Arlen, Johnny Mercer, Duke Ellington, Isham Jones, Gus Kahn, Errol Garner, Jimmy van Heusen and others. 

Great Blue Heron is an all-star group of musicians from musical Marin County, California who love and play classic jazz in the mode of Frank Sinatra, Nina Simone, Ella Fitzgerald, Michael Buble', Etta James and others. Many of the songs on Feeling Good are new duets on tunes that were previously recorded as solo vocals. Others are new arrangements featuring multiple harmonies and backup singing that add to the energy and appeal of the song. An outstanding quartet provides a full yet spare platform for the vocals. On Fly South, the Egrets have crafted new versions of tunes by southern writers and songs that are often played at parties in Nashville, where two of the Egrets lived for several decades. The songs feature lots of gospel-inflected harmonies and the accompaniment of ace studio musicians who have worked with artists in this genre ranging from Whitney and Aretha to Leon to Maria Muldaur, Big Brother, Bobby Womack, Tina Turner, and Gladys Knight and jazz musicians including Joe Henderson and the Crusaders. Makes for an interesting and inspiring sound. You'll hear great keys, sax, slide guitar, and all sorts of other things.

Purvis and the Stray Dogs have compiled a standout collection of old and new rockabilly for your listening and dancing pleasure. This double CD pays tribute to and reinterprets some great and some more obscure rockabilly tunes. The pompadours (real or imagined) are gone, but not the vocal and instrumental passion, driving beats, and occasional full-blown romanticism. It’s homage to the artists who originally blended rock, country and soul to produce eminently danceable, hip-shaking music. The music lives on, with updated arrangements and recording.

Rock the Dog Park includes Purvis’ signature versions of great rockabilly tunes from Elvis, Carl, Lee Rocker, Leon Russell, Eddy Cochran, and Freddie Mercury. Some of these tunes were not well known, or had faded from memory (or the fans’ memory has been fading), so Purvis wanted to bring them to wider attention, or as he said, “drag them suckers out of the cellar before the rats eat them or some hippie sells ‘em at a yard sale.”
