About Special Projects Records

Special Projects Records (SPR) was founded by Jeff Harris, Jimmy Sage and Mary Anderson in 2004 in Mill Valley CA.  SPR's Windsong Studios overlook the south side of Mount Tamalpais, the famous Sleeping Lady of Miwok myth.  The views and Windsong's redwood studio inspire great playing and songwriting.  We started the studio to make audition demos, but it was so much fun and sounded so good that we started producing final versions of songs and CDs.  The studio is digital and acoustically live, facilitating very high-fidelity recording.  Many of the instruments we use are vintage.  Our prior location in Nashville TN used analog tape and traditional isolation rooms.

SPR has a core group of guest studio musicians (see the Musicians tab) who contribute to the inspiring and engaging sounds of our bands: Purvis and the Stray Dogs, The Egrets, Left on Lonely, Great Blue Heron, the Firepersons, The Anderson Family Band, and Jazzy (see the Bands tab).

In the business world, people are assigned to “special projects” as a way of easing them out the door, or for secret or undercover assignments.  The name is a bit tongue in cheek in this instance, given the stellar credentials of the house band.  Undercover, or “under the radar” (there is a radar installation on Mount Tamalpais) is probably most appropriate here.
